If you read last month's newsletter you heard how Marilyn and I always recommend whole foods rather than fractured supplements. Well , let us qualify that statement just a bit.

 

In reading Dr. David Brownstein's book we are convinced that Iodine is a much needed and rare nutrient in our daily diet.  Dr. Brownstein's research has indicated that our food supply is dangerously low in this vital nutrient.  Indeed , the Federal Government years ago required table salt to contain Iodine so as to increase the amount in America's food supply because it was found that low Iodine caused a goiter problem in many Americans.  When the Iodine was added to the salt, the problem became much less prevalent. So iodized salt is still on the grocery shelves.

 

Since then, other research has shown that the recommended levels of Iodine and Iodide in our diet is ineffective in restoring needed Iodine to our bodies. Dr. Michael Donaldson, research scientist at Hallelujah Acres has added his research to Dr. Brownstein's and recommends one of two supplements.  The first is called Iodoral, a tableted version of Lugol's Solution which was developed in 1829 and is still used today. The tablet contains 12.5 mg of total iodine, 5 mg. of I₂, and 7.5 mg of iodide as KI.  Iosol is the iodine supplement that is a liquid 4% solution of ammonium iodide and iodine in glycerin. Each drop contains 1.83 mg of iodine, about 0.8 mg as iodide in ammonium iodide, and 1.0 mg as iodine (I₂). The drops can be diluted in water, a portion of which can be taken for lower doses. Dr. Donaldson says:

 

The doctors who developed Iosol in the 1940s were looking for a form of iodine that had fewer allergic reactions compared to potassium iodide. Their claim is that ammonium iodide is more "available" as free iodide ion compared to potassium iodide, in which they claim the potassium and iodide ion bind more tightly together. Some people have been able to tolerate Iosol more easily than Lugol's solution or Iodoral. However, it has been difficult to determine which of these supplements really works better.

 

Dr. Donaldson goes on to say that only Iodide is available in sea vegetables and that it comes along with lots of toxins including heavy metals and arsenic.  So a supplement of a mixture of iodine and iodide is a good idea.

We really enjoy this dish!  The lightly-toasted sliced almonds and special sauce give it a unique flavor.

 

Steam sauté' the following for 5-6 minutes in a small amount of water:

1 large package of broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower mix (add additional vegetables if desired)

1/2 cup diced red peppers

1/2 cup diced onion

2 cloves of fresh garlic, minced

Meanwhile, in a small pot, mix and cook the following on low heat until thickened:

1/2 cup pure water

1/4 cup Nama Shoyu or other organic soy sauce

1 teaspoon arrowroot powder (cornstarch substitute)

2 teaspoons pure male syrup

Pour sauce over drained veggies.  Put a lid on your pan to give the flavors a chance to mingle.  Garnish with 1/4 cup lightly-toasted sliced almonds.  This can be served over brown or basmati rice, or it tastes great served alone with an additional vegetable like tiny, baby lima beans and a nice large garden salad.  Dinner is served.

Water. We cannot live without it.  We can go maybe 40 days without solid food, but only about four days without water. Virtually every function of our body depends on it.

 

So what kind of water is best to drink? The kind of water you find in fruits and vegetables is organic water. That is, it is water that has lots of organic minerals in ionic solution. That kind of water can transport nutrients to our cells most efficiently and hydrate your body adequately. So eat plenty of raw fruits and vegetables and you will get plenty of healthy water. Fruits and vegetables contain from 85% to 95% water. If you can't eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables for some reason or other, then drink distilled water or filtered water. About half your weight in lbs in ounces of water is just about right. So if you weigh 150 lbs. then you should aim to drink about 75 ounces of pure water per day. We suggest those on the Hallelujah Diet & Lifestyle should drink distilled water for the first year, then go to filtered water. That way you take advantage of the detoxifying effect of distilled water and then you can go to less active, more alkaline purified water, such as the Living Water from EcoQuest International.
