The fastest growing childhood disorder in the U.S. is ADHD, Attention Deficit Hypertensive Disorder. Both ADD and ADHD have similar symptoms as gifted children. ADHD students and gifted students have these common characteristics: poor sustained attention, lack of persistence on task, impulsivity, poor attention - boredom - daydreaming, low tolerance for persistence with tasks that appear irrelevant, judgement often lags behind their intellect, difficulty regulating behavior in social settings, active and restless, difficulty adhering to rules and regulations, power struggles over behavior, high activity level and needs less sleep, questions rules and regulations. Are we chemically destroying our brightest and most gifted children by drugging them and altering their personalities and limiting their potential? In 1987 ADHD was literally voted into existence by the American Psychiatric Association with no objective means of diagnosis. Within 1-year 500,000 children in the US were diagnosed with this disorder. Today the number is closer to 5,000,000. 4 to 6 Million children and teens are on psychiatric drugs. The United States uses 90% of the world’s Ritalin®. Ritalin® and cocaine both go to the same receptor sites in the brain. According to the DEA ­ “neither animals nor humans can tell the difference between cocaine, amphetamines or methylphenidate (Ritalin®) when administered the same way in comparable doses. . . .they produce effects that are nearly identical.” As per the DEA ­ more than 1 in 30 American students ages 5 to 19 have a prescription for this drug. Bruce Wiseman, National President of the Citizen’s Commission on Human Rights identified 11 major acts of violence in a two year period of time connected with psychiatric drugs including the following school tragedies: Oct. 1, 1997 Pearl MS ­ 16-yr-old Luke Woodham, killing 2 & wounding 7; Dec. 1, 1997 West Paducah, KY ­ 14-yr-old Michael Carneal, killing 3 & wounding 5; March 24, 1998 Jonesboro, AR ­ 11-yr-old Andrew Golden and 14 yr-old Mitchell Johnson shot 15 killing 4 students & 1 teacher; May 21, 1998 Springfield, OR ­ 15-yr-old Kip Kinkel murdered his parents, proceeded to his high school killing 2 students and wounding 22 others; April 16, 1999 Notus, Idaho ­ 12 yr-old Shawn Cooper injured 1 and held the school hostage with a shotgun; May 20, 1999 Conyers, GA ­ 15-yr-old T. J. Solomon wounded six students; Breenwood, SC ­ 19-yr-old James Wilson killed 2 and wounded 7 children and 2 teachers. There is a better way than with drugs. Educate yourself. Did you know that schools get extra funding for every ADHD child? Did you know that the school cannot require your child to be psychologically tested? Did you know that the school cannot legally tell you your child needs medication? If your school tells you that your child is a problem, assure them that you care and will take action. The action you take should not be drugs. How do we deal with ADD or ADHD in a natural way, apart from dangerous drugs? First, get rid of sugar highs and lows. New Jersey was the first state to ban the sale of candy and sodas during school hours, with tremendous results. Getting rid of processed and junk foods is a great first step. Next, eliminate allergens, including cow milk, wheat and wheat products, as well as chemical food additives which are in most processed foods. Next, help the body repair the damaged gastrointestinal tract with whole, raw foods, and a healthy intake of EFA, essential fatty acids. Eliminating animal protein can drastically help the body return to health. Marilyn's Citrus Veggie Medley Sauce: 2 tablespoons arrowroot powder (cornstarch substitute) 2 tablespoons organic sucanat (sweetener) 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1 cup freshly-squeezed orange juice 1/4 cup organic soy sauce such as Nama Shoyu 2 cloves garlic, minced Blend the above ingredients and set aside. Steam saute' the following in a skillet for 5-6 minutes or until vegetables are tender: 1/4 cup distilled water (add more if needed) 2 organic carrots, sliced 2 cups organic broccoli florets 1/2 cup chopped onions 1/2 cup chopped peppers (not green peppers as they are not ripe) 2 cup organic cauliflowerets 1/2 cup fresh sliced mushrooms 1 cup frozen green peas Stir the orange juice mixture and add to vegetables.
