Juicing Jewels Marilyn and I have been juicing for over four years now and would like to offer some suggestions to make your juicing more enjoyable, easier, and more nutritious. First of all, remember that fresh, organic, California carrot juice is full of antioxidants, beta and alpha carotene (precursors of vitamin A), lutein, and a wide assortment of other vitamins and minerals, not to mention live enzymes that can bring vitality to every cell of the body. If you can't find organic carrots look for carrots from Grimmway Farms of California, who grow over 80% of the carrots that are in our stores, whether they be organic or commercially grown. Bunny-Luv carrots are the organic carrots that Grimmway produces. We get our carrots from Sam's Club here in Jackson, TN. They are called Premier but are Grimmway Farms carrots. Of course the brand of juicer you have determines the quality and quantity of juice you get from your carrots. We don't recommend the spinning basket juicers you can find in discount stores. They add heat, air, and static electricity to the juice which kills live enzymes. We recommend either the Champion Juicer (household or commercial) or the Green Star Juicer (GS1, GS2, or GS3). After using the Champion Juicer for almost two years we know that it is a dependable, easy to clean, sturdy machine that will deliver plenty of fresh juice with little deterioration over 24 hours of storage. The Champion Juicer gets almost four times the nutrition from carrots as does the spinning basket juicers (tests by Hallelujah Acres). We store our juice in the coldest part of the refrigerator in eight ounce canning jars filled to the brim and sealed tightly. Some have used the "Pump 'n Seal" device that removes a lot of air in the jar. I'm told that it increases the storage time of the juice. The Champion Juicer is available from us for $179.50 plus shipping and it lasts for years as well as retaining resale value. The best juicer for health is the Green Star Juicer. It is a twin gear juicer that gets almost double the nutrition from carrots as does the Champion Juicer (H.A. tests). The best part is that the Green Star juice lasts three full days with little or no reduction in nutrition or liveness. That means that you only have to juice on Monday and Thursday. With the Champion Juicer you must juice every other day and with spinning basket juicers you have to drink the juice immediately. The Green Star is a little more difficult to clean but when you realize that you are getting better, longer lasting juice I believe it is worth it. It still only takes a few minutes of rinsing and brushing to clean the juicer. About once every two months we soak our juicer in either vinegar or baking soda to loosen mineral deposits. A stainless steel brush is better for cleaning the fine screens in both juicers. For those of you who might be weakened by illness or age, you might want to split the carrots lengthwise before juicing to allow easier insertion into the gears. Also, you can buy baby carrots which are a lot easier to juice. We have a double sink and we start by cutting the ends of our commercial carrots then throwing them into the first sink. I then peel them with a potato peeler (the best is Cutco), rinse them, and throw them into the second sink. If the carrot is over one inch in diameter, I throw it on the cutting board to be split. We also add organic spinach to our carrot juice, so we include a few leaves along as we juice. I have two hot beds in which we grow our own organic spinach. For plans to build a spinach hotbed go to . We put one medium beet into our juice to add more nutrition and to help with detoxification. If we use an organic beet , we rinse and split; if a commercial beet, we peel, split, and rinse. When starting the diet, be careful about beets because they can purge your body of toxins faster than you may desire. We sell the Green Star Juicer in three combinations of attachments . Marilyn's Pumpkin Cookies Put a whole pie pumpkin in a 300 degree oven on a cookie sheet until soft to the touch. Let cool slightly, half, then scoop out 1 cup of the cooked pumpkin. Mash and add the following: 2/3 cup raw honey 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 2 cups whole wheat flour* 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 cup organic raisins 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon Rumford aluminum free baking powder Mix well then drop by teaspoonfuls onto a cookie sheet.
